Israel

The holy land in all its glory.

Israel is sometimes called the homeland of the Jews. It may be the only country that disappeared for over a 1,000 years and then was re-established. Israel is located in the Middle East.

After an uprising in 70 CE, the Romans destroyed most of Jerusalem including the Temple on Mount Moriah. The inhabitants were then exiled to many other lands. Jews slowly began to return to the region in later centuries.

See State of Israel for information about the current country.

Hebrew

In Hebrew, it is written as ישראל. It is pronounced Yis-ra-el, and in transliteration is usually spelled Yisra'el or Yisrael.
