The Pharaoh of Genesis is the king of Egypt who appears in the Book of Genesis story of Joseph. He is a very different character from the later Pharaoh of Exodus.

After Joseph saved Egypt from years of famine, this pharaoh favored Joseph. This pharaoh rewarded Joseph and allowed him to invite his family to join him and to live in Egypt.

By the time described in the Book of Exodus, this unnamed pharaoh had died. Generations of pharaohs had succeeded him to the throne of Egypt. Since neither pharaoh is named in Torah, the two different pharaohs are distinguish here by the book in which they appear.

Djoser[]

  • According to the Famine stele, Djoser ruled during the seven year famine. The Famine stele also states that while Djoser was sleeping, he received revelation in a dream. This is similar to the Genesis account.
  • There are big storage areas inside Djoser's pyramid. The Genesis story tells that Joseph stored food for 7 years.
  • Djoser lived a few generations before Menkaure (the Pharaoh of the Exodus).
